Closets 101

Confused by all of the terminology?  We've put together a complete glossary so that you'll know what's what.

Wall Hanging vs. Floor Support Closet Systems-  There are pluses and minuses to each design consideration.  Wall hanging is a good idea if you 're planning to change the carpet on a regular basis or if the closet is in, or close to a wet area.  A floor supported closet can be a better choice because the full panels (from floor to ceiling) can be easily modified from hanging to shelves or drawers.

Laminate- This is what custom closet panels and shelves are made from.  It is typically a particle core material with a melamine finish. This material is very stable and can take a lot of abuse.  We use a commercial grade product that is extremely durable.

Panels- This is the vertical member of the closet system.  They can range in size from 24" in length to 96" in length.  Standard closet depth (front edge to back edge) is typically 14".

Fixed Shelf-  This is any shelf that is locked in place either by cams or screws.  It's purpose is to provide stability and structure to the closet assembly.

Adjustable shelf-  Just as the name implies, these shelves can be moved around (or taken out) so you can make modifications to you closet.  Shoe storage is the best example-  closer together for sandals and flats, farther apart for high heels and boots.

Long Hanging-  This term applies to clothing that is longer than normal- dresses, slacks, robes and jackets.

Medium or Double Hanging-  Most clothing falls into this category- shirts, blouses, slacks folded over a hanger.

Upgrades-  These are the items that give your closets the "Wow" factor.  This includes such thing as doors, drawers, baskets, crown molding, closet bench, belt, scarf and tie racks and valet rods.

Interlocking Cams- These are the part that gives your closet some structural strength.  They are better than nails or screws because they give you the advantage of being able to easily unlock your shelf and move it to where you want.

Trim Accessories-  Closets can really be transformed from simple to sublime with the use of such things as crown molding, base molding and fluted fillers.  The exciting thing about a custom closet is you can make it fit your personality while at the same time being very functional.

Specialty Tools-  We want you to have the closet of your dreams, so we offer you the use of some very specialized tools.  One tool I use on every job is my Laserjamb (check it out at www.laserjamb.com).  It can check both horizontal level and vertical plumb.  This tool will help you to have a perfect closet and a square and solid closet.

Educational Seminars and Training-  We want you to have a great time building your new custom closet- we don't want you to fail or be disappointed.  We offer free seminars and on-site training with each closet we sell.  We'll let you have some hands on training, answer all you questions, and we will be available to answer you phone calls.  You have nothing to lose.

This is an example of a reach-in  closet.  The closet system being used is floor supported.  The vertical panels are 85" tall and 14" in depth.

You can see the flexibility of a closet system- shelves, hanging and drawers.  And, this is a closet you can easily build!
